Sunday Squares
Do you knit? I’ve been knitting for longer than I’ve been crocheting but don’t view myself as a particularly accomplished knitter. I’m fine until something goes wrong and then I find it very difficult to put things right and get back on track. It’s all those live stitches! When I do pick up my needles, it’s usually to make mitred squares. Each one is a little project on its own and not too many stitches to get into trouble with.
This is my largest knitted mitred squares blanket to date. It was an absolute joy to make, but it took forever.
The Sunday Squares pattern bridges the gap between the desire to make mitred squares vs. time available. Like its knitted counterpart, each square is joined to the next by picking up stitches. Not a stitch of sewing required. The little squares work up quickly and it’s easy to pick up and put down. Perfect for a relaxing Sunday.
I’ve used my collection of hand dyed mini skeins to make my blanket but you can use any weight or fibre yarn you like. It’s a good way to use up scraps and I’ve included lots of detail in the pattern about yarn requirements to help you plan.
I enjoyed making it so much, I couldn’t resist starting another one straight away, this time in King Cole Cherished dk. It’s a great alternative to the hand dyed yarn and I’ve chosen shades that mirror those in my original version. I chose the yarns for each square randomly in my wool blanket, but if random isn’t your thing, the pattern also includes a square by square colour layout to follow using the Cherished.
