The Trellis Blanket — A Decade in the Making
Designing blankets is a funny thing. Sometimes an idea arrives out of nowhere and everything flows easily. That was the case with the Quiet Sky Blanket — one moment of inspiration and I was planning it by lunchtime. But not all designs come together that way.
The Trellis Blanket has been with me for over ten years. I started working on the basic square back in 2014, trying different stitch combinations, changing colours, adjusting spacing and shape. But something always held me back. I couldn’t settle on the right palette or border and spent years making and remaking test swatches that never felt quite right.
Now, I’m absolutely delighted with the result.
Trellis is a modern take on the granny square — rhythmic, calming and simple to make. It’s built from sixteen identical squares that are crocheted together, so there’s no sewing . The stitch pattern is straightforward and satisfying, and the look is clean, bold and textured.
This is a project that suits confident beginners as well as experienced crocheters. The pattern includes step-by-step photo tutorials and video guides to help you through every stage, from your first square to the final border.
The pattern is available as a digital PDF download, written in UK terms, with a separate US terms version available too. Here are the links:

The finished blanket is 120cm by 120cm, but it’s easy to adjust the size. I’ve included the exact yarn quantities for each square, so you can scale it up or down and calculate how much yarn you’ll need. You can also substitute with any yarn brand or weight — just follow the hook size recommended on the ball band, and use a half size larger for the border where noted in the pattern.
For this version, I used Stylecraft Special DK (100g / 295m balls) in the following colours:
• Mustard x1
• Spice x1
• Copper x1
• Cream x2
• Duck Egg x3
• Mushy Peas x1
• Mistletoe x1
• Waterfall x2
The full yarn pack is available from Black Sheep Wools.
You’ll also need 4mm and 4.5mm crochet hooks, a yarn needle, and scissors. The blocking board is completely optional (I just used mine for a pretty picture), but here is the link to the one I have.
If you enjoy a calm, relaxing project that you can work on while watching tv, AND with beautiful results, I think you’ll love making this one. And if you’d like some company while you crochet, or want to ask questions about the pattern, you’re warmly invited to join my Made by Anita Facebook group. It’s a supportive, friendly space where I share updates, answer questions, and admire your makes.
It has taken me a long time to get Trellis just right, but I’m so proud to finally release it. I hope it brings you as much calm and satisfaction as it brought me.
